食育はグッドアイディア!
樋口：ところでウェイドブラウン市長もお子様をお持ちだとお聞きしました。日本では「食育」といって、子供の養育と食事についての教育が重視されはじめています。ニュージーランドでは「食育」にあたるようなものはありますか?
ウェイド＝ブラウン市長：「食育」ですか!? それはとても必要なこと! グッドアイディアです。実際の所、ウェリントンでは中学生向けに食の教育をする程度で、ニュージーランドでも十分にできているとは思えません。
樋口：そうなんですか。
ウェイド＝ブラウン市長：貧困世帯に対する全体的な取り組みが行われています。貧しい世帯では食事が偏りがちですから、大学と料理学校のル・コルドン・ブルーが協力して、安価で簡単なレシピ作りが行われたり、営業が終わったベーカリーでまだ食べられるものを集めて貧しい世帯に配ったりしています。
樋口：ありがとうございます。そろそろお時間のようですね。お忙しい中、インタビューに応じていただきありがとうございました。
ウェイド＝ブラウン市長：こちらこそ。最後に皆で写真を撮りましょう。（同行する市役所スタッフやライターにも声をかけ）皆入って。ほら、素敵な恰好しているあなたも入って。
Food Education is a good idea!
Higuchi: We hear you have children. In Japan, there is a word “Syoku-iku” which means Food education especially for children. Recently we consider it very important. Do you have similar program in New Zealand?
Mayor Wade-Brown: “Syoku-iku”? It’s necessary and I think it’s a very good idea. In Actually, only junior high school students are taught about food in Wellington. We probably don’t do enough in New Zealand.
Higuchi: I see.
Mayor Wade-Brown: When people who don’t have some much money they can’t eat healthy food. We have school hospitality, a Food technology school and Le Cordon Bleu cooperate and develop simple and less expensive recipes. And at the end of the day, a bakery collects food as charity and distributes to the people who don’t have much money.
Higuchi: Thank you. It’s about time. Thank you very much for making time in your busy schedule.
Mayor Wade-Brown: My pleasure.Last of all, let’s take a picture, getting together! (Speaking to Sakai city staff and a writer) Come in! Why don’t you come in with your beautiful outfit.
渕上談：対談中ずっとメモをとっていたのですが、最後に突然服装をお褒めいただき写真撮影にお声掛けいただきました。気さくで気配りのゆきとどいたウェイド＝ブラウン市長に脱帽です。
狭間副市長談：ウェイド＝ブラウン市長は、今年の夏のバカンスにご夫婦で自転車を楽しむとおっしゃっていました。また、息子さんたちへのお土産にと、自転車博物館では自転車のネクタイを購入するつもりだそうで、本当に自転車がお好きのようです。
日本でももっと女性が活躍されるように、と応援の言葉もいただきました。市長という激務をこなしながらも、気さくで行動的、ご家族をとても大切にされている素敵な女性です。
I respect Mayor Wade-Brown who is not only generous but also thoughtful.
She seems to be a lover of bicycle, as she said she was supposed to buy bicycle-printed neck ties for her sons at the Bicycle museum in Sakai.
“I wish Japanese ladies would play an important role” Mayor Wade-Brown encouraged.
Devoting herself to working as mayor, being not only frank but also dynamic, she is an attractive woman who cares about her family.
