観光地として努力

樋口「実際に堺に足を運んでいただく観光客の方への対策はいかがでしょうか。最初の話にも出た仁徳天皇陵も、中に入れるわけでもないし観光スポットとしては楽しみにくいとの声もありますが?」
竹山「実はこの（2014年の）3月末から、仁徳天皇陵のお隣の堺市博物館で、３D映像で古墳を体感してもらう施設が出来るんです。3D映像の古墳の中に入っていけたりね」
樋口「それなら、バーチャル感覚で古墳観光を楽しめますね」
竹山「そしてもうひとつ。あの周辺には高い建物が建てられないのですが、それは世界遺産の登録を審査するICOMOS（国際記念物遺跡会議）の関係で、景観への影響を配慮してのことなんです」
樋口「しかし横からではなく、上から古墳を見たいという感想はよく聞きます」
竹山「そこで気球をあげて空から観光してもらおうという計画が進んでいるんです。この気球はワイヤーのある安全性の高いもので、すでにカンボジアのアンコールワットや、韓国の慶州などでも使用されています」
樋口「すごい計画じゃないですか!」
竹山「空から百舌鳥古墳群全体を周遊してもらおうと考えています」
樋口「観光地として大きな目玉になるでしょうね」
竹山「それを目指しています」
樋口「もうひとつ堺には観光地として大きな懸案があってグルメの問題です。特にお土産モノに関しては適当なものが少ない」
竹山「堺といえば和菓子ですが、日持ちの問題があって、なかなかお土産に適さなかった」
樋口「和菓子は冷凍保存すると硬くなって、解凍すると味がどうしても……」
竹山「ところが、最近は不凍タンパク質というものの研究がすすんでおり、堺の和菓子屋『河月堂』と大学のコラボで、冷凍保存しても味の落ちない和菓子ができそうなんです」
樋口「私も先日ニュースでやっていたのを見ました(笑)。和菓子の輸出も可能になるかもしれない。堺の和菓子が世界へ発信できますね」
竹山「そうなって欲しいですね(笑)」

— Developing tourism in Sakai

KH: How about the existing tourist attractions in Sakai? Isn’t there a need for major developments in that area? For instance, the Mausoleum of the Emperor Nintoku is a famous spot but visitors can not enter it.
MT: Yes. In fact, starting March 2014 the Sakai City Museum, which is located just by the site of the Mausoleum, will house a facility where visitors will be able to virtually experience the Mausoleum in 3D. Another idea we have is to set up a system of hot air ballons in the vicinity of the site, such as those found in Angkor Wat in Cambodia or Gyeongju in South Korea. They are very safe. Tourists boarding them will be able to have a grand view the Mausoleum from up high.

KH: Another front that needs further developments is the “omiyage” (souvenir) industry. Sakai seems to be lacking a souvenir that is easily identified with the city.
MT: Sakai is famous for the Japanese sweets, but they must be savoured quickly, since they do not last very long. In order to tackle that problem, the sweet shop Kawatsukido has been collaborating with a local university to develop a new protein that would allow the sweets to be frozen without affecting their taste. So in the near future, we might be able to freeze these sweets and export them overseas. Literally, from Sakai to the world!
