17世紀後半。堺に生まれたものの一度途絶えた焼き物の系統が存在しました。
その名は「湊焼」。
豊臣秀吉の聚楽第から『楽』の一字をもらった楽焼。その３代目道入の弟道楽が現在の堺市湊で開いた道楽窯が『湊焼』の始まりとされています。
湊焼は、その後弟子が受け継ぐも明治時代に廃窯となり、一度は再興したものの、結局昭和５１年２代目新平の逝去により途絶えてしまいます。
現在、堺市中区福田で陶芸教室M・O・Cスタジオを主催する中橋一彰さんが、『湊焼』の復興に尽力しています。
河内長野市出身の中橋一彰さんが、堺出身だった父の縁もあり中区の福田に窯を開くことになったのが2006年。その際、堺の地で出会った赤焼き茶碗。それが『湊焼』でした。
「汚い茶碗やな」出会いはそうでした。しかし日が立つにつれ何故か湊焼は脳裏に浮かんで離れなくなり、夢にまで見る始末。

The Minato Yaki style was born in the second half of the 17th century in Sakai. Its originator was an apprentice of the pottery style Raku Yaki, which flourished in the period of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Minato Yaki lineage continued until the Meiji period when it ceased to exist. It was again revived, just until 1976, when the leader of the school, Shinpei the 2nd, passed away.
Kazuaki Nakahashi, ceramic artist based in the Naka Ward, Fukuda, is once again bringing the MInato Yaki style back to life at M. O. C. Studio. Originally from Kawachi Nagano, Kazuaki Nakahashi came to Sakai – his father’s hometown – in 2006. His first encounter with the Minato Yaki was a red tea bowl. It was not so aesthetically appealing – or so he thought then – but for some reason its sight stayed with him through the days and nights.
